Young athletes, although appearing perfectly healthy on the outside, could be at risk for sudden death due to an undiagnosed heart abnormality. The athletic screening program consists of a limited heart ultrasound (echocardiogram) examination and a standard electrocardiogram (EKG).
The echocardiogram is focused on the four leading causes of sudden death in young athletes:
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (abnormally thick heart walls)
Abnormal mitral valve
Abnormal aortic valve
The electrocardiogram helps to rule out abnormalities in the heart's electrical activity.
The total time to complete both tests is approximately 20 minutes. Both tests will be interpreted by Dr. Klodas with the final report being delivered to the appropriate person within 5 - 7 business days.
Please click on echocardiogram or electrocardiogram for a detailed explaination of each test.
A brochure and liability waiver will be given to the student athlete prior to the screening exam explaining the limitations and risks. It is important that these limitations and risks are understood and the liability waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian prior to the exam.
